Taking e-commerce Faster than ever in the last two weeks, my Twitter timeline has been filled with operators who continue to say that the weekend looks like Black Friday, even for unnecessary items. The change is already here.
Looking at the graph in this tweet from Shopify CTO Jean-Michel Lemieux – and the disproportionate mention of “Offline 2 Online” – got us interested.
Apart from the obvious evidence, we found signs that tell us that e-commerce is gaining momentum. One way to find out is to look at the historical data on how Shopify has been hiring merchants on a monthly basis for the past two years, and how it compares to the first year of this year.
All of these data points come from PipCandy’s own data platform that tracks approximately 750K + Shopify merchants with historical data:
While 2020 began to work at a faster clip than in 2018 and 2019, February and March did not diminish the jaw-dropping merchant numbers for Shopify. In those two months, Shapiro seems to have picked up more merchants than in 2018 as a whole.
The slowdown you see in April is a result of the way our systems have validated and validated the data, and not the slowdown per second. Accepting e-commerce is real.
